Managing Cultural Differences

Preparing for Inter-Cultural Business Activity

Magellan's Managing Cultural Differences seminars are diagnostically-based management development programs focusing on specific country-cultures (for example, Japan, Singapore, France, The United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, etc.) or regional areas (such as Northern Europe, Southern Europe, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, or Latin America). They are intended for use in organizations that face the challenge and the promise of working in other geographical and cultural environments.

Participation

Participants in MCD programs:

  • develop a clear understanding of their personal and cultural style and those styles impacting others in the workplace
  • learn to identify key motivational need systems as they are indicated by others' behavior
  • using culturally sensitive techniques and principles, learn to assess their own motivational needs and those of others
  • learn to manage by cultural rules that are different from their own
  • learn team-building strategies that work in cross cultural settings
  • develop sensitivity to different cultural settings, and the necessity of recognizing and using alternative management models to increase effectiveness in their own organizations
  • learn the important characteristics of other cultures as they pertain to their own management situations
  • learn tips and traps for doing business in other cultural settings

Implementation

When you implement the delivery of MCD in your organization, you can expect that your management team will:

  • improve their ability to use cultural data to improve their effectiveness as managers
  • reduce turnover of key employees
  • improve organizational morale
  • improve their overall performance management effectiveness, and the effectiveness of their work group

Understanding

Utilizing case materials from Magellan's Doing the Right Things video series, these one- or two-day programs are designed around empirical models of cultural analysis, and recent sociological and psychological findings, as well as written case materials that present real business issues and problems. Members of your organization will learn to understand differences as representing potential for enrichment and creativity in the organizational environment. They will learn specific skills that will enable them to adjust their perceptions and their behavior to interact with and / or manage people from different backgrounds more effectively, to meet the demands of intercultural situations, and to improve the productivity of culturally diverse work groups.

Managing Cultural Differences seminars are intensive, experiential programs which use group process as well as individual diagnostic activities, assessment exercises, and readings. They are usually tailored to match your specific cultural and business issues. Time demands vary according to the specific issues addressed and the range of cultural diversity that characterizes your organization and situation.
