Making Down-sizing Work

Achieving Peak Performance in the Wake of Significant Organizational Change

The current trend toward lean, efficient organizations has also sometimes produced undesirable side effects, the most important being that of a seemingly continuous downward spiral of revenues and earnings for companies that have sought to "down-size." Early reductions in force, intended to reduce costs and improve efficiency, often produce poor morale and disruptions in teamwork, that are usually followed by even lower revenues. The poorer revenue picture, in turn, appears to justify further cuts in budget and personnel. Once begun, this downward spiral is very difficult to control.

Assistance

Making Down-Sizing Work is a one-day program that is designed to assist managers in coping with teamwork and motivational problems accompanying efforts to reduce costs and streamline organizations. Participants focus on a real case study of an organization attempting to reduce manpower and increase market effectiveness. By understanding a simple model of how people react to the cultural shock that accompanies down-sizing efforts, and by learning specific techniques for helping people redirect their efforts toward important organizational missions and goals, participants are taught to overcome the negative effects of down-sizing, manage work teams more effectively in periods of organizational stress, and reverse the downward spiral.

Participation

Participants in MDW programs:

  • develop a clear understanding of their own personal style and how it impacts others
  • learn to identify others' motivational need systems, as they are indicated by people's behavior
  • develop an understanding of various forces that cause dysfunction in a down-sized environment, with special emphasis on those who remain on the payroll following a down-sizing effort
  • learn how people with various motivational need profiles normally react to organizational stress
  • learn techniques for managing effectively in a down-sized environment
  • regain focus on organizational vision, mission and goals
  • build teamwork strategies that implement shared organizational values

Implementation

When you implement the delivery of MDW in your organization, you can expect that your management team will:

  • be energized and focused on key organizational mission and goals
  • reduce turnover of key employees
  • improve organizational morale
  • improve overall management effectiveness and begin to move the organization forward in a dynamic and positive manner

Benefits

Making Down-Sizing Work is a case-driven, highly participatory program that will help managers at all levels reverse the common negative effects of reductions in force, and create dynamic and vital work teams, focusing individual efforts on the achievement of critical organizational goals. Skill sets that usually comprise MDW include: management challenges in a down-sizing environment, understanding corporate culture shock in a down-sizing company, how people react to organizational stress, assessing team members' motivational needs, techniques for managing down-sizing, regaining focus on organizational vision, team-building strategies to implement shared organizational values, and planning to enhance work group performance.
